In the thick of all our adored home comforts, the everyday towel receives the most robust movement and friction. Whether it’s hot water and harsh detergents in the washing machine, or regular exposure to all those oils and soils – our fluffy and luxuriously soft towels deserve some tender love and care to ensure forever comfort. So, if you’ve been thinking “how can I make my towels softer?”, you’ve come to the right place. We’re chatting through all the top tips - from less detergent and lightening the load, to the power of white vinegar and a pinch of baking soda.
Less Is More
Towels absorb a lot of soapy residue which builds up overtime, making the towels feel hard and rigid. We deserve luxuriously soft towels everyday, so by using slightly less of the recommended detergent, your cycle will have a higher chance of rinsing away the last bits of soap. Another tip is to make sure your cycle is set to warm water, this will help with absorbing detergent better and leave less residue on your towel.
Hommey Tip 2: Vinegar And Baking Soda
The holy grail of all cooking condiments - baking soda and white vinegar. Silicon can be found in most fabric softeners — which actually makes towels water repellent, so they won’t get a good wash. By adding one cup of white vinegar (roughly around every 6 weeks or so) to your normal cycle, the build up of residue will disappear leaving you with a soft, fluffy and extra clean towel. Similarly, baking soda will bring the fibres of your towels back to life and make them even softer. Simply combine half a cup of baking soda with your normal detergent and instantly notice the difference.
Hommey Tip 3: Lighten The Load
Popping too many towels in your washing machine at once can put pressure on your machine and won’t give it enough breathing space to rinse all the detergent and residue from your towels. Instead of pulling out stiff and rigid towels, add two or three bath towels at a time and prepare to wrap up in engulfing soft towels.
Hommey Tip 4: The Tennis Ball Trick
Have an old tennis ball hanging around at home? Put it to work by placing it in the dryer with your towels! This trick will help remove any unwanted lumps and bumps while making your towels extra plush and soft.
