51cm x 51cm - Essential Cushion

Difference Between Essential / Standard Cushions And Pillows?

Pillows play a crucial functional role in the bedroom by providing essential support for your head, neck, and spine alignment. On the other hand, our standard size cushions (51cm) are primarily used as decorative items for everyday couches in the lounge, including sofa cushions, feature chairs, cozy beds, and any other nook that could benefit from an added touch of comfort.

How Many Essential / Standard Cushions Do I Need?

The number of standard cushions you choose is entirely up to you. However, we understand that it can be challenging to determine the appropriate amount of standard cushions required for your living room, bedroom, or home. As a general rule, we suggest the following cushion quantities as a rough guide:

The 2 - 2.5 seater: build the foundations of comfortable lounging with these sofa cushions; x2 Big cushions or x2 Essential (standard size) couch pillows, and 1x Junior cushion.

The 3 seater: More room = more sofa cushions! Style together x4-x5 Big cushions or Essential (standard) cushions for a luxuriously full aesthetic.

The 4 seater: x4 - x6 Big couch cushions or Essential (standard size) couch cushions will bring your couch to life. Add on x2 Lumbar cushions and x2 Junior cushions as the cherry on top.

Beds: For a queen sized bed, we love the look of x2 Big bed cushions on either side, followed by x2 Essential cushions (standard size) with either the choice of the Lumbar or Junior cushion to bring the aesthetic full circle. For bigger or smaller beds, you can add or take away as many cushions as you like due to the versatility and design of our cushions.

How To Choose Standard Cushions?

The selection of standard size cushions ultimately comes down to personal preference and the desired style and atmosphere you wish to create in your space. Fortunately, our cushion collections offer a diverse color palette and a variety of cushion fabric materials that can complement any interior. It's essential to carefully incorporate cushions into a space that matches them, so start by observing what you already have in your space, highlighting different colors, materials, and artwork that will be further enhanced by Hommey's cushion covers.

For those seeking a more subdued and minimalist look, our Linen and Corduroy cushion collections will add a layer of comfort for ultimate rest and relaxation. If you're looking for vibrant and eclectic bursts of color, our signature Bouclé and Velvet cushion collections will be the perfect choice.

Do Standard Cushions Need Covers?

We recommend popping a cushion cover over your standard size Hommey cushion inserts. This will not only add more colour, interest and depth to your space - but it will also protect the standard size cushion inserts and prolong your cushions longevity, so you can have your cushions forever.

How Do I Look After My Standard Cushions?

Machine Washable Cushion Covers

If the cushion product care tag says that the standard cushion cover can be machine washed, simply unzip the cushion cover and remove it from the cushion. Once the standard cushion cover is placed in the washing machine, pop the cushion cover a gentle cycle in cold water with mild, natural detergent. Make sure the cushion cover is zipped up before (just in case the cushion cover twists and turns into a tangled mess). Cushion covers can be hung outside on the line, or to avoid shrinkage, place the damp cushion cover onto the cushion and let it dry molding itself to the shape of the cushion for the perfect fit.

Hand Washing Couch Cushions

Make sure you take a good look at the standard cushion cover care tag to see if the cushion cover is machine washable. If not, there are a few steps you can take to get rid of any stubborn stains on your cushion cover. Firstly, remove the sized regular cushion cover from the cushion inner so the inner doesn’t get damaged or wet. In a spray bottle, mix 1 cup of white vinegar, 1 cup of water, and 2 tablespoons of all natural dish soap. Lightly spray the cushion cover stain and give the mixture a minute or so to sink into the cushion cover.

Once the liquid has settled into the cushion cover, lightly dab the stain with a cloth until it has removed - do not scrub aggressively as this may damage the fibres in the cushion cover. Once the cushion cover stain is gone, use a separate clean rag and make it damp with clean water to rinse the spot, leaving it fresh to dry. Top tip: baking soda is a great tool to use on cushion cover stains that have a stronger odour - simply leave overnight and repeat the above steps.

Once you’ve completed the cushion cover spot stain removal, give the cushion an overall clean to make sure all remaining dirt is gone. Add a drop or two of natural dish soap to a damp cloth and gently rub the entire cushion cover with it, covering each corner of the cushion cover. Repeat until there is no dirt left and use a new damp cloth to rinse the cushion free of remaining dish soap.

How Often Should I Clean My Standard Cushion Covers?

Scheduling time to clean and maintain freshness of your cushion covers should definitely be part of your cleaning routine! Removing dirt and dust from your cushion covers can be done once a week with a vacuum cleaner, and we recommend washing the cushion covers every three months to prolong longevity. If you notice a stain on your cushion cover, we recommend jumping on the clean up job as soon as possible for ease of removal from your cushion. Once you’re done with the regular maintenance, you’ll be ready to sit back and enjoy your space in all of its freshness.
